  • For a basic lip balm you could use safe ingredients like petroleum jelly, food colour for that tinge and any preferred juice or extract for a natural flavour.

This recipe is for a very basic lip balm which you can do so much with; substitute ingredients if you like. For example; or wax are great vegan substitutes to beeswax. Personally, I would prefer to make my products vegan but I have a ton of beeswax in my supply kit at the moment and want to use it rather than waste it. You can also add a tint for color (dried beetroot or saffron powder will work), or maybe rose petals for a visual vibe. It is really up to you, and there are so many choices out there. Let your Creative You Flow!

This morning on Wellness Wednesday, Natural Health Consultant Fenella Jane was in the studio, and right in front of my eyes, she made her 'Basic Beeswax Lip Balm' recipe. The smells of the rose geranium were lovely, but you can "man" it up a bit if your bloke would like to try (orange essential oil or lemon myrtle works a treat). This base recipe can be used to make a body balm as well, it's not just for your lips.Fenella says "give it a try, save some money and avoid the chemicals".Basic Beeswax Lip Balm by Fenella JaneIngredients:80mls Olive oil (or you may use almond, apricot, kernel ect)25mls Melted Beeswax 5 to 10 drops of Sweet Orange pure essential oil (or Peppermint, Rose Geranium, Lime ect)You may add a few drops of Vitamin E oil, Rose-hip oil or Jojoba oil.Method:The Beeswax should be melted using a double boiler. I like to use an old pot for this purpose as the wax is hard to clean off. Takes about 5 to 10 minutes. While the wax is melting bring the Olive Oil to almost boiling point (approx 80 degrees) You can use a small pot on the stove or place in the microwave in an glass Pyrex bowl.Once both ready, put the 25mls of Beeswax into the Olive Oil.Add your other essential oils ect, then pour into the Lip Balm containers.Makes about 10 (10 ml size) Lip Balm containers.Voila! These will set in around 10-15minutes. If you'd like to listen to the segment again, you can, rightWellness Wednesday includes some great local professional talent, from podiatrist to dentist, exercise physiologist, to natural health... catch it every Wednesday on ABC NENW with Anna Moulder, from 7.15am.
