  • CVS has begun putting limits on the amount of remover a customer is allowed to purchase. Additionally, someone trying to buy nail polish remover will now have to present a valid ID in order to do so. The reason being? No, drinking nail polish remover isn't the latest junior-high-get-drunk fad (that's so 2011): Acetone, a main ingredient in most nail polish removers, is also apparently a major ingredient in the production of meth.

UPDATE: CVS has announced that it will no longer require photo identification to be shown in order for customers to buy nail polish remover in most states.

  • We still had a few questions. Like, can an eight-year-old not buy nail polish remover with her allowance money? And what if my nail polish is all chipped and unsightly but I lost my ID at da club? And how will looking at someone's license stop the underground meth trade? We spoke to a CVS employee in Harlem for some answers.

WELCOME BACK EVERYONE. FIXING THAT MANICURE JUST GOT A LOT HARDER IF YOU SHOP AT C-V-S. THE STORE JUST LAUNCHED A NEW POLICY THAT REQUIRES AN I-D FOR ANYONE WHO BUYS NAIL POLISH REMOVER. K-O-C-O'S ERIELLE RESHEF EXPLAINS WHY THE MOVE, COULD CURB METH PRODUCTION. IT'S A PRODUCT THAT MAY BE COMMON IN YOUR CABINETNAIL POLISH REMOVER WITH ACETONE. BUT NOW C-V-S STORES WILL MAKE YOU SHOW I.D. TO BUY IT C-V-S SENT KOCO A STATEMENT ABOUT THE NEW POLICY THAT READS IN PART "Because Acetone is an ingredient used in the illegal manufacture of methamphetamine, we recently implemented a policy that a valid ID must be presented to purchase acetone-containing products" MARK WOODWARD OF THE OKLAHOMA BUREAU OF NARCOTICS SAYS THIS MAY YIELD MORE PUBLIC BACKLASH THAN REAL RESULTS. 58:07 - 58:13 "often times the public will be concerned that they're being inconvenienced for what a small group is of people might do." THAT'S WHY OBN TARGETED THE MAIN COMPONENT IN METH... 59:36 - "the only thing that cannot be substituted is pseudoephedrine. That is the prime ingredient that they all must use and that is why we put it in pharmacies and required a signature back in 04 and it's been effective." 59:46 BUT WOOWARD SAYS METH COOKS CAN GO ELSEWHERE TO BUY ACETONE OR USE OTHER INGREDIENTS. 1:30 "you're probably looking at 6000 products just that are commonly sold in today's retail stores" 1:37 TAG ERIELLE DID GO INTO C-V-S TODAY TO BUY A BOTTLE OF NAIL POLISH REMOVER, AND WAS I-D'd. C-V-S TELLS US-- ALONG WITH ASKING FOR YOUR LICENSE.. THEY'LL ALSO LIMIT THE NUMBER
