  • The success of potassium iodide depends on numerous factors. Because the chemical does not completely protect an individual against radioactive iodine exposure, precautions should be taken to increase the likelihood of success. Potassium iodide taken directly before or after a nuclear event will provide the best protection. The more time that passes between exposure and supplementation, the higher the risk of poisoning. While individuals can increase the odds of survival by having IOSAT packets or other potassium iodide products in an easy-to-reach emergency preparedness kit, they cannot control the amount of radioactive iodine in the air or how quickly the potassium iodide absorbs in their blood.

When the radioactive version of the salt enters the air or poisons food, the thyroid gland absorbs the harmful chemical, producing internal contamination. Potassium iodide provides stable iodine that can prevent the absorption of radioactive iodine even during a radiological or nuclear event. The thyroid gland becomes so full of stable iodine that it cannot begin to process additional salt for 24 hours. While table salt also contains iodine, it does not provide a sufficient enough dose to block the absorption of radioactive iodine. IOSAT packets provide potassium iodide in convenient tablets with the necessary concentration to prevent harm to the thyroid gland.

  • Wind direction determines where any released radiation will travel. If high levels get into the atmosphere, those exposed are usually given potassium iodide to help prevent .

There have been no studies concerning animals and the administration of Potassium Iodide for radiation emergencies. Like humans, animals do not normally have any allergic reaction to limited doses of Potassium Iodide. For animals with no known iodine allergies (ask your vet) it is a relatively safe drug. If you wish to administer potassium iodide to your pet, follow the Iosat dosing chart amounts listed above in the “What is the dosage?” info and give the appropriate dosage based upon weight. For instance, the dosage for a 2-year-old child would be 32mg (1/4 tablet). If an average 2-year-old weighs 25 -30 lbs., a dog weighing the same would take the same dosage, 32mg (1/4 tablet). If a 2-week-old infant weighs on average 9 pounds, then you would give a 9 pound cat/dog 16mg (1/8 tablet). Crush it up and put it in their food. Please consult with a vet in advance to make sure your pet can safely take Potassium Iodide.

Following are some facts about potassium iodide:
    * Potassium iodide is a common form of salt, similar to table salt. It can protect the thyroid gland from radiation and cancer caused by radioactive iodine. Known chemically as KI, the substance saturates the thyroid gland with non-radioactive iodine, reducing how much dangerous radioiodine the gland can absorb.

Just as in buying any type of insurance, you must be prepared in advance, rather than being just one minute too late. When crisis strikes, the time to prepare is over. It will be like trying to buy fire insurance when the house is on fire. Time and time again we have seen it happen when crisis strikes. Chernobyl, Desert Storm, and after 9-11, all of our in-stock supplies of Potassium Iodide vaporized off our shelves as customers bought all we had within minutes of the crisis hitting the news.
